Numenius phaeopus
are these birds nesting on the beach?
Pismo beach.
Joshua,I might revisit! It was superb . For me the grand finale was the pelicans bomb diving for food!!
Thanks so much Joshua, Ashley and Forest.
I saw and heard a curlew in Bolsa chica wetlands!! They make their presence known!!
I shall go with Whimbrel!
I've seen Long-billed Curlews before. They are not much like this. EBird range and field marks highly support Whimbrel.
Habitat may be a better match for the Whimbrel, as they tend to be primarily coastal.
I believe that the bills are too short for a Long-billed Curlew, however, I would not rule out a Bristle-thighed Curlew, Numenius tahitiensis.
Hema, did you see either of these birds fly or hear them call? The Whimbrel and Bristle-thighed Curlew are identicle in size and shape but have different calls. The Bristle-thighed Curlew has a "cinnamon rump and upper tail" (per Cornell Lab of Ornithology).
There is a tab for the call for the Whimbrel on this link:
