California Pipevine Swallowtail

Battus philenor hirsuta

Description:

Bluish Black swallowtail. Dorsal is blue black iridescent with pale spots near edges of the hind and upper wings. The underside of the hind wings have blue with 7 orange eyespots on each wing with white crescents along the edge. Underside of upper wings have small white spots. Spots along the sides of the abdomen. Northern California species is smaller then most of the other subspecies.
