Calliope Hummingbird (male)

Selasphorus calliope

Description:

Migrating hummingbird that uses California as one of its fueling stations for it's long journey. Known for being the smallest breeding bird in North America and possibly the smallest long distance migrant in the world. Mostly green on back and flanks with a long purple-pink feathers on the throat. Bill and tail is a little shorter then some of the other hummingbirds in its range.
The sound the male makes sounds like electrical sparks or what I call little ground spinner firecrackers. Where the Anna's feed off the red Indian Paintbrush, these seem to prefer the white flowers of the Black Sage

Habitat:

At this stage it was in a canyon.

Notes:

Second image is a Calliope being chased by a Sharp-shinned Hawk. Guess who is faster?
