Western maidenhair fern

Adiantum aleuticum

Description:

A deciduous fern that has a shiny purple-black stem that grows erect and split in two, from which fan horizontal fronds of tiny leaflets.

Habitat:

Spotted on a moist cutbank near the Snoqualmie river.

Notes:

Native mainly to western North America from the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, south to Chihuahua, and also locally in northeastern North America from Newfoundland south to Maryland.
