Wheel Bug

Arilus cristatus

Description:

Brownish grey insect similar in color to a dead leaf or branch. Six legs, two antennae, one piercing/sucking mouth. High, spiked ridge down it's thorax and some stripped patterns on its abdomen. Not sure if it had wings, but it looked possible. Two eyes near the top of its head, and close together.

Habitat:

It's the middle of fall here in Kansas, so temperatures have been steadily climbing down. We have experienced one light freeze but not another for several days now. The leaves are falling off trees and the humidity is dropping too. This guy was hanging out on the post of our clothes line, in a high spot.

Notes:

Could this be an assassin bug? If so, what type? Thanks!
