Ichneumonidae
Usually nocturnal, these wasps can deliver a painful sting if handled improperly. The sting temporarily paralyzes caterpillar hosts. The female lays eggs in her victim, puncturing the body wall in the process. The wasp larva then feed on the caterpillar.
This insect flew into our home and landed on the lamp. I managed one shot and then it fell into my ice water. He was quickly removed and put back outside. It seems to have the upper body of a robber fly, but the antennae seem too long. The length is actually about 1", not including the antennae. Any ID help is greatly appreciated! :)
