A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Phoenicopterus roseus
Large wader, with rosy to whitish appearance, with a very long legs and neck. The body is white, while the wing coverts are salmon pink, with black flight feathers. The bill is large at the base, curved, pink with the black tip ; adapted to feeding by filtering the bottom sediment.
Common resident in sub-Saharan Africa, patchy distribution. Found on shallow lakes, salt pans, lagons and sandy beaches; and most often in smaller groups or colonies. Here, on one of the two lakes in Abidjatta-Shalla National Natural Reserve. This beautiful reserve consists of two lakes of the Rift Valley lakes system; and is situated on altitude of 1500m and 2000m. Beside the two lakes, the park is mainly savanna and open acacia woodland, with other thorny shrubs and euphorbias; very rich in birdlife (over 300 species recorded) but not so much in other wildlife.
