Sudan Golden Sparrow

Passer luteus

Description:

This is a small sparrow, 12 to 13 cm in length. Breeding male is distinctive by its bright yellow head and underparts with deep chestnut brown mantle, marked by two white wingbars, and black bill. Female (photo No ) and non-breeding male are duller, rather drab in color, pale sandy with yellowish face, light brown wings. For me, I easily confuse them with females of some finches or widowbirds or indigobirds or...

Habitat:

Present in all Sahel belt, from east to west. In Khartoum, my encounters with this species were always on farmland. In this spotting, I observed it in a mixed flock of finches, indigobirds, house sparrows and silverbills (these latest pictured in photos 5 and 6). These farmlands were on banks of Nile, but very close to center of Bahri, one of the three cities making today's Khartoum.
