Black Spiny-tailed Iguana

Ctenosaura similis

Description:

These medium sized iguanas, grey with black stripes, were literally and impressively everywhere on and around the Mayan ruins of Edzná. They are not easy to approach and will run away or hide in holes and cracks when people approach. They were mostly on the ground and on rocks, but I did see one get chased up a tree and stay there for about an hour. They can run very fast and the males are aggressive towards one another. The males are larger with longer necks and back spines and are thicker in the neck than the females. The first picture is of a male, the second of a female and in the last picture there is a male and female together.

Habitat:

On the ground, rocks and ruins of the Mayan Ruins of Edzna.

Notes:

This species exactly match the rocks of the area and if they do not move, they are not noticed. This species is native to southern Mexico and Central America.
