Zygomycete Fungus

Phycomyces sp.

Description:

Giant Sporangiophore (so say the experts)! These grayish hair-like filaments growing up from the ground with tiny "beads" are the spore mass for this interesting fungus. Phycomyces blakesleeanus has been extensively studied in labs. It is found to be very sensitive to light, gravity, gasses and nearby objects. These sensitivities help determine how it grows. There are only three species in this genus, not sure which one this is.

Habitat:

Backyard bordering grass lawn and home.
