Pectinatella magnifica
Aphotic zone freshwater aquatic
Thanks Jared. I'd be interested in any further records in new locations; you can email me at marinecrab1@gmail.com. (Ideally, Pectinalla records would include the location & date of collection, the name of the collector, and an identifiable photo of the colony or statoblasts collected. Statoblasts are essentially Pectinatella's overwintering seeds; Pectinatella's are distinguished from those of other freshwater bryozoans by the double-hooked spines on the circumference of the statoblasts; images can be found on the web.)
This was actually in Blue Lake which has a small connection to the Columbia. I have also recently spotted a great many at Cullaby Lake and some at Mercer Lake (coastal lakes) while sampling this summer. Hope that helps!
Jared, did you find it in the Columbia River or in Fairview Lake? I'm trying to map Pectinatella magnifica's distribution in Oregon. It's native to eastern North America.
Have never heard of Moss animals before. Thanks for the information link.
