Anhinga

Anhinga anhinga

Description:

This black bird with yellow beak, is one of a number that have minimal oil to its feathers, greatly reducing its buoyancy and allowing it to remain submerged longer than other birds and catch fish and other creatures it eats. This also necessitates the bird to stand with wings spread to dry before it can fly. Also known as the snake bird as it often swims submerged with just a part of neck and head protruding above the surface appearing like a snake.

Habitat:

This one is sitting on a man made pipe in the man made wetlands in Christmas Florida, designed to process millions of gallons of waste water from the City of Orlando, as the water is moved through various cells, it is filtered by the soil, before being dumped back into the local aquifer.
