Elegant Stinkhorn

Mutinus Elegans

Description:

This is a fungus I found growing in my field last week after a few days of rain. Had I known it was growing I wouldn't have picked it up, but it looked like something tossed into it from the road. As soon as I picked it up I saw where it had broken off. It is slick and spongy, and quite delicate. A piece broke off, and it smelled horrible.

Habitat:

Grassy, low-lying field.

Notes:

It is completely hollow, with an opening at the end.

Nice find! Welcome to the world of stinkhorns! These phallic looking fungus are beautifully colored. At the tip there is usually a greenish slimy spore mass that is quite smelly (usually like something rotting or dead) that attracts flies. These flies feed at the spore mass and then spread the spores when they leave.
