También conocida como laurel de flor, rosa laurel, baladre o trinitaria - entre otros, es la única especie perteneciente al género Nerium incluido en la familia Apocynaceae. Planta arbustiva - que puede llegar a árbol de porte pequeño - de hojas perennes lanceoladas de un verde intenso y flores de color rosa (en la variedad silvestre). Las hojas, flores, tallos, ramas y semillas son venenosas. Es una planta muy venenosa y totalmente desaconsejada para uso particular con acciones muy fuertes sobre el corazón en dosis pequeñas, por esta razón su uso debe estar sujeto a control médico. Dada su toxicidad, y a pesar del incumplimiento de la norma dado que se vende libremente en viveros y similares, en España está prohibida la venta de esta planta. Habitat:

Arbusto que crece preferentemente en los barrancos y torrenteras desde el nivel del mar hasta unos 1.200 metros de altitud. Se encuentra en zonas de clima mediterráneo. Aguanta bien los períodos prolongados de sequía. Prefiere pleno sol. Is either native or naturalized to a broad area from Mauritania, Morocco, and Portugal eastward through the Mediterranean region and the Sahara (where it is only found sporadically), to the Arabian peninsula, southern Asia, and as far East as Yunnan in southern parts of China
