Whale Shark

Rhincodon typus

Description:

Whale sharks are "slow-moving filter feeding sharks" and the "largest known fish species" in the world today. We saw 10 on this particular day, the largest being closet to 10m long. They can been seen in all tropical and warm-temperate seas around the globe.

Habitat:

Please note that while we saw these in the wild, we saw them in Oslob, Cebu. This is a controversial site as they are feeding the whale sharks and there are about 14 (when we went) that show up every morning at about 6am and leave the area at about noon. I understand the potential negative consequences of changing animal behaviour, but also see the positive aspects in education and public awareness of these amazing animals. It was an amazing experience.
