Brown thrasher

Toxostoma rufum

Description:

This brown thrasher was spotted in my backyard near the woodpile and was staying close to the trees and dense brush nearby. It was the first time I've seen it in the backyard. Male and female are similar. About the size of the American robin, but more slender, much longer tailed. Upperparts entirely bright rufous; underparts white to buffy-white, especially on flanks, with extensive black streaking. Wing coverts with black subterminal bar and white tips, forming 2 wing bars. Bill long and slender. Has a Yellow eye.

Habitat:

The brown thrasher is widespread in eastern North America. This one was spotted in my backyard in Millersville, Maryland.

Notes:

The brown thrasher is the state bird of Georgia.
