hypolimnas misippus
No problem rdx1312. Nice to be of help. I think its clear that this is a Danaid eggfly (Hypolimnas misippus) male.
Yes, it's a danaid :) See the white patch on the underside?

Great work, Jolly! Thank you all for helping with the identification process :)
And here is the underside of Hypolimnas bolina: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hypoli...
Here is the underside of Hypolimnas misippus: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hypoli... I hopr this clears matters.
I had taken these snaps with my smartphone (5mp camera) about a month back. I was browsing through my photo library and found that I had a snap with it's back wing too! The 3rd pic shows the dots. Now, hopefully, we can freeze on an ID :)
Really getting to be confusing if there's no photo of the underside.. @Leana, your spotting is a great eggfly as can be seen from the 3rd picture, where the underside is seen. My spotting is also an H. bolina but with 3 dots present - http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/161....
@Leana: your spotting ID seems correct (which is same as this). I will change the ID back to Great Eggfly.
I don't see 3 small dots in my Great Eggfly spotting at http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/123....... Does this mean it is a Danaid butterfly? Im confused O.o
ok, so this makes it a great eggfly then and not danaid since the 3 dots in the upper forewings are missing? So confusing! If what @AgnesAdiqueTalavera said is true (about the 2 blogs) then it indeed is wrong ID'd in many blogs.
The one in treknature.com is a danaid, and the one in kousik.blogspot is a great eggfly (the 3 small white dots are visible in its upper forewings).
It seems Ashish Nimkar is not contented with this spotting's ID.Can any ranger help?
Danaid Eggfly should look like http://www.nerdybirders.com/html/butterf...
I find this butterfly wrong ID in many wesites...

I just want to add -- I found this Butterflies of India site a very good reference:

Pls take note of the series of three small white dots at the upper side of the forewing of the male H. bolina, and which are missing in male H. misippus. Here is my spotting of H. bolina - http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/161..., clearly showing these white dots.
Yes, Adarsha. You too had suggested that this is danaid eggfly. So I'll go with majority :)
No pressures from anyone. What matters is correct classification. I thank all the nature lovers who commented here to make that happen :)
Oh..finally it came back to my suggestion (in first comment) of Danaid eggfly only??? Nice discussion ...
Precisely. But if there are other objections from anyone, its up to you to decide on what ID you are going to follow. Mine is plainly a suggestion with no pressures on you. Thanks.
Agreed. The wing pattern looks more like this.

Please take a look at this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hypoli... The wing pattern differs from your spotting.
