red-eyed vireo

Vireo olivaceus

Description:

This is a first spotting for me of a red-eyed vireo. It was high in a tree almost hidden by the leaves and did not stay put for long. A large vireo and it likes to sing which is why I was able to spot it. It has a bold face pattern with white eyebrow, bordered above and below with black. Ruby red iris of adult visible at close range. Gray to blue-gray crown contrasts with olive back and darker wings and tail. Lacks wing bars.

Habitat:

In the woods at Downs Memorial Park (Anne Arundel County), Pasadena, Maryland.
