Tara (White-fronted Terns)

Sterna striata

Description:

The White-fronted Tern (Tara) is the most common tern of New Zealand. It rarely swims, apart from bathing, despite having webbed feet. The species is protected. This flock of Taras was spotted at Waikuku beach, Canterbury NZ. It was a very windy and cold winter day, and we tried to come closer but not to scare the birds away, although eventually the flew due to the presence of other people near the spot they were resting.
