Belted Kingfisher

Megaceryle alcyon

Description:

This bird has distinctive markings...a heavy bill, stocky body, and a feather crest which resembles a "bad hair day." They are very shy, and difficult to approach, even to snap a photo. This one (male) was spotted on a branch over an Ash Springs pond in the Nevada Mojave Desert fairly close to Death Valley, California. They seem to frequent a specific territory, working the waters for fish.

Habitat:

Ash Springs is a riparian area, designated as a National Wildlife Refuge.
