Fruit Bat

Description:

Winged mammals. Leathery wings. Furry bodies.

Habitat:

Kandy Botanical Gardens. There is this one area where these bats roost...hundreds of them.

Notes:

I think this is Pteropus giganteus. Wherever we drove in Sri Lanka we saw electrocuted carcasses of these bats...skeletonized remains hanging from overhead electric line. Very sad...I think it is because their large sizes and outspread wings bring them into contact in such a way that the circuit is completed...because birds perch on these wires all the time without harming themselves.
