Bull Ant

Myrmecia nigriscapa

Description:

A large reddish-brown ant about 25 mm long. The abdomen was part brown and part black. Eyes were black, shiny and beady. The antennae had a black basal part ( Scape) giving this species its name "nigriscapa".

Habitat:

Spotted wandering around a walking track in a reserve - Langwarrin Flora & Fauna Reserve.

Notes:

This species is native to Australia and seen densely distributed in the southern Australian coastal regions. Family: Formicidae
Subfamily: Myrmeciinae

Thanks armadeus.4. It was one of about 15 shots - ants are very difficult to photograph (especially with a pocket camera like mine!)
