Jovial Jumping Spider

Apricia jovialis

Description:

A small (9mm) black spider with stout brown legs and some feint cream-coloured markings on its abdomen. Looks a bit like the Brazilian... http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/104...

Habitat:

Ceiling in suburbia.

Notes:

Ha! This IS the Brazillian. Breda jovialis is actually a Brazillian species. It is not yet determined if the Ozzie version is genetically different. In the meantime we go with this name...
http://www.findaspider.org.au/find/spide...
Also known as Summer jumper and Jovial jumper. Patterns on these abdomens very considerably. The adult ones have the 2 bands joined with a strong patch of yellow in the centre of the abdomen. The younger ones may have only the beginnings of the white bands showing. This one might be a male going by the slender abdomen. Some other references to highlight the variations

UPDATE: Name accepted now is Apricia jovialis

Hi Sara and thanks heaps for your suggestion. This spider is from a different family than those whitetails. Jumping spiders (Salticidae) have eyes spread around their heads! Lampona eyes are all gathered up the front of the head http://www.flickr.com/photos/spidermanbr...

Thanks Jellis... I agree there's some 'stay away' about this one.
