Foam Nest Frog

Chiromantis xerampelina

Description:

These frogs make a foam nest laid over water, then when the eggs hatch, a liquid in the egg dissolves the foam, and the tadpoles drop into the water below. That helps them stay safe from predators who like to eat frog eggs, and gives them a better chance at surviving to be adults.

Habitat:

miombo woodland, 1000m

Notes:

I was lying down just relaxing near the main lodge in Namizimu forest reserve when I spotted this in the tree above me. I wasn't sure it was anything until I got my camera and could see with my telephoto lens that it was a frog on the branch.
