Arnaca Blue Ringlet

Chloreuptychia arnaca

Description:

The upper wing flashed a beautiful blue while flying. Might be difficult to ID because I don't know if there are eyespots in the missing bit (amongst other things!) It looks like a Ringlet, but there are many different species...

Habitat:

Wet dark tropical rainforest, under the trees

James I have 20 + of these little brown butterflies unidentified on my site if you have time to take a look... Quite far back, but if you search for unidentified Costa Rica, they'll come up eventually.

thanks James. I waited a long time to get an open wing shot of that beautiful blue, but it wasn't co-operating. Every so often it would flick the wings open for a split second, but one didn't know when...

I am no expert but I would bet money on it. I take shots of a native blue in Florida a lot and there are always tiny discrepancies. Just like us people. But feel free to wait for confirmation from other sources

thanks James, yes that's the site I was using. I agree that it matched well in all things but the spots. Didn't know how important that was.

If you look at lines and pale areas and all the other details it has to be right!

thanks James. I looked at that, but discarded it. Seems to me the top 3 eyes on the back wing, are all joined within the white surrounds, as are the top 2 on the top wing. While in the Chloreuptychia arnaca, they are separate. It definitely flashed blue though while flying.
