Tree Swallow

Tachycineta bicolor

Description:

I was thoroughly surprised to see a tree swallow peek its head out of a bluebird nesting box. These birds eat a lot of insects. Adults have dark blue iridescent feathers on their back, with a snow white throat and breast. Males and females look alike, although females may be a little more greenish. Some adults are drab gray. They look like they are wearing a tuxedo. Their wingtips reach the tip of their tail. They do not have strong legs. They eat and drink on the fly. They are amazing to watch their aerobic flying both on land on over water.

Habitat:

All across the continental U.S. This tree swallow was spotted near a nesting box at Kinder Farm Park in Anne Arundel County, Millersville, Maryland.
