Common Five-ring

Ypthima stellera stellera

Description:

Ypthima stellera stellera (Eschscholtz, 1821), a five-ring Satyrinae butterfly endemic to the Philippines, is more prevalent in Luzon and the country as a whole, than the more famous Y. baldus (Common Five-ring) which occurs mostly in Palawan. The typical yellow-ringed black ocelli is a distinguishing feature of the various species in the Ypthima family. The pair of rings at the tornus of the hindwing is counted as one. The total number of the rings counted thus give this species its common name.

Habitat:

Backyard, spotted amongst weeds. Had a run of good weather, that I spotted a number of five-ringers basking in the sunlight the whole of this week.
