Scarlet-bodied wasp moth

Cosmosoma myrodora

Habitat:

spotted on tall wildflowers along stream on semi-improved property

Notes:

This native Florida moth has a unique defense system. At maturity the male moths begin to feed on poisonous dog fennel. Then, during mating he uses the acquired toxins to produces a protective cloud around himself and his mate. http://www.wfu.edu/wfunews/2000/121200a....

Thank you all for your comments. This spotting actually contains two individuals. And searching for possible sexual differences led me to the interesting facts about the male's defense strategy.

The transparent wings with moth vein patterns looks totally wrong on this supposed wasp. That's impressive.
