Northern Cardinal

Cardinalis cardinalis

Description:

Named after the High priest of a catholic church the Northern Cardinal is one of the most frequent visitor to birdfeeders everywhere. The males are red with black mask on front and face. The female (as seen here) is a duller grey with only orangey red tipped crest, along the wings, and the tail feathers. They are said to be the first birds to feed in the morning and last to feed a night according to records.

Habitat:

Often seen in Urban areas with feeders. They are common for backyards with Safflower and mixed seeds.

Notes:

These birds often come to my feeders and they are just amazing little birds. I always see them when I do my early morning bird watching just to keep track of the local activity. Cardinals are one of my favorite birds and it is always a pleasure to see the mating pair in my yard feed at my Safflower feeders.
