Hi Rieko, there seem to be lots of subspecies of white-eyes around the world. See this Wikipedia article for more details on the family http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White-eye and this one for the Zosterops genus ('typical white-eyes') http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zosterops. The specimen pictured here is a Zosterops lateralis which, as you mentioned, only occurs in the south-west Pacific, so I suspect the bird you're referring to is in the same family (and possibly looks very similar) but is not the same as this one.
It is interesting because in my country, it is called White-eyed, so I checked with Wikipedia. It says "The Silvereye (Zosterops lateralis) is a very small omnivorous passerine bird of the south-west pacific. In Australia and New Zealand its common name is sometimes shortened to White-eye," so they are the same, correct?

Thanks Jill! They are beautiful little birds. The white eye-ring is so striking.
