Black Bass

Micropterus sp.

Description:

c 20+cm long

Habitat:

Garden pond

Notes:

Some kids put this in our pond years ago when it was just a few cms long. We had not seen it for about a year but it reappeared this winter when I cleared away all the dead and dying lily leaves.

Sorry for my late answer..... your description of the behaviour fits really an a black bass.
And the small size can relate to the size of the pond.
...for me it´s a black bass... :-)

It is a very small pond, 3-4 metres across and only a few cms deep at times. There are also 3 Bluegill ( Sunfish - Lepomis macrochirus) living there, slightly shorter but fatter. They all refused to touch fish food but did go for the odd worm and this one nearly always won. Not sure what they live on apart from the odd tadpoles in season. They jump after dragonflies sometimes but I've never seen them catch one. They have even survived the attentions of Herons and Egrets occasionally.

Yes...20cm are not that big, but I read that the bass in europe will not grow that much as in the united states.
The size can also depend on the size of the pond and the natural food inside.

The form, drawing and fins really look like a largemouth bass.
Because of the size I´m not that sure.

Hmmmm.... don't you think 20cm is rather small for an adult Bass? Average would be 40-60 cm.
