Black Vulture

Coragyps atratus

Description:

These scavenging birds are big and almost pitch black. Their feathers are big and bold their heads are completely naked and a lighter shade of darkish grey and black. They are much like the turkey vulture and are the two most common seen in Texas.

Habitat:

Anywhere food is available in Urban areas but mostly undeveloped areas and country sides.

Notes:

This one was being harassed by a Blue Jay (picture two) it was too close to a nest where a community of Monk Parrots live. This vulture was found by the Everyman Library just perching while ducking a Blue Jay who was furious and very territorial. It was funny to watch nature in action and I got several videos showing the Blue Jay try to frighten the Vulture away. It was a victory for the Jay after about fifteen minutes that Vulture took off. He had enough being dive bombed for one day it was time to retreat.
