Araschnia levana f. prorsa
The map (araschnia levana) is a butterfly of the Nymphalidae family. The map is unusual in that its two annual broods look very different. The summer brood are black with white markings, looking like a miniature version of the white admiral and lacking most of the orange of the spring brood.
long time no see. :D
the butterfly may be Araschnia burejana. it's in all japan but Araschnia levana is only in Hokkaido.
thanks Daniele... you're doing great! i never heard of a MAP butterfly before. Interesting that many are the same as ones in Europe.
I hope someone will confirm it :-) This butterfly is relatively common in parts of Europe, and quite interesting because of its too distinctive forms. I'm proceeding very cautiously with your Japanese spottings as I lack the specific info/library I have for Europe for instance, but it is fascinating to see the species/genera which are shared between temperate European and Asian regions :-) I need to visit Japan beyond Tokyo!
