Whitefly Pupae

Pseudozaphanera wariensis

Description:

Small black and slightly raised ovoid shapes about 2 and 3 mm long. Each of these structures had a white fringe and 3 raised tufts of white material, which were firm to touch. The larger of these structures had a shorter fringe and the large white tuft on top showed a slit as can be seen in pic 1.

Habitat:

Spotted on a leaf on an Acacia tree - species not known.

Notes:

I assumed that these were Scale but a little investigation suggested that these were pupae of whitefly, a sap-sucking hemipteran.
My thanks to Peter S.Gillespie for identifying these pupae.

Thanks Cindy. I just had a look at yours - very clear shot.

Aren't the patterns amazing !? Cindy, Mark thought you had a similar spotting but I could not find it on PN. Have you put yours up yet ?

Awesome! I've recently discovered Whitefly pupae in my own backyard and am excited to see yours. Love the faces!
