Bumble Bee Mimic Flower Scarab

Euphoria basalis

Description:

A Bumble Bee sized flower Scarab that spends all of its adult life emersed in the pollen at the center of these large Composite flowers (Tithonia tubiformis). They can and do fly, but prefer their scare tactics for being left alone by predators. Family Scarabaeidae, Cetoniinae. In the last picture, there is also a well camouflaged Cerambycid beetle which also hides in these flowers (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/156...).

Habitat:

Feral field, semi-urban area, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico 2,200 meters.
