Madagascar Hissing Cockroach

Gromphadorhina portentosa

Description:

These are a couple of my pet roach brood used for feeding to my aquarium fish. Range from 1-4 inches. Dark brown and deep chocolate coloration. Males develop proto-horns on their heads. Wingless. Can produce a foul smelling aroma when alarmed. Called hissing cockroaches because they can expel air from their spiracles to produce a hiss.

Habitat:

Madagascar in the wild. 2.5 gallon terrarium in my home captivity.

Notes:

Wonderful climbers who can scale glass. Escape artists. Females carry young internally and bear live nymphs. Grow rapidly and reproduce fast in warm climate, become docile and near inactive during cold weather. My pet roaches become very active during stormy weather, I presume because of a drop in atmospheric pressure.
