Yoyetta abdominalis
About 35mm long; dark eyes; abdominal rings of dark and yellow; orange sex organs. Slightly hairy at thorax.

This one is not fully coloured - it will end up almost totally black. http://morwellnp.pangaean.net/cgi-bin/sh.... Appearance: Similar to the New England Firetail, but with larger yellow-orange triangles covering most of the dorso-lateral section of the abdominal tergites. Also the sternites have distinctive reddish-orange coloration. Body covered with conspicuous fine hairs. Size: Forewing length: 22-29mm. This is a spotting of the final moult sequence http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/161... Name change - used to be Cicadetta abdominalis. http://collections.museumvictoria.com.au... http://bie.ala.org.au/species/Cicadetta+...
I think I searched for cicada, "red tail", victoria... sometimes I think it helps to try to see it in 'layman' terms because so many ordinary people are using the web to find stuff out. (like me!)
Hey don't be sorry Sara you did great and we both learnt stuff. That's what it's about. You pushed me into really looking properly and I found a whole lot more good info. Thanks so much. :)
Wow they're tricky aren't they... I had no idea there are so many. And so many look the same. And they ID them often by the call !!! This one was quiet unfortunately. Really interesting website though. Thanks for trying.
I may have had the wrong one, I'm looking at this site at the moment.
