Stephen, you presented us with quite a challenge - which of your awesome photos should we choose as Spotting of the Day? This great encounter with an elusive animal won the honor! Congratulations & welcome to the Community!

The fossa is a cat-like relative of the mongoose, unique to the island of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. Numbers of this secretive carnivore are declining due to the destruction of its forest habitat and widespread hunting and persecution, and the species is classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. http://bit.ly/1hhDH4k

This female was exhausted after mating with several males over a course of many hours so I was able to approach her to within a couple of metres without any risk as Fossa can be unpredictable at the best of times. Kirindy is the best place in Madagascar to reliably see the islands top predator especially October/November which is the peak of the mating season for this animal. It's also one of the best reserves for nocturnal mammals.

Wow,amazing capture Stephen, can you tell us something about this great encounter :-)congrats and thanks for sharing
