Horse Fly

Tabanus sp.

Description:

Large fly. Thorax mottled brown and black. Wings attractively patterned gray and black. Abdomen dark with gray triangles. I didn't get a good face shot of the eyes but they appear to have at least one colored band across them that looks green in my images. These flies feed on the blood of mammals and can give a fairly painful bite.

Habitat:

Suburban parking lot. Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia.

Notes:

Any help figuring out the species would be welcome!
