Tundra (whistling) swan

Cygnus columbianus columbianus

Description:

Adults are completely white, while immature birds have dull gray feathers, mainly on their heads and upper necks. We saw tens of thousands of these swans during their migratory winter sojourn along the North Carolina coast. They are very vocal when foraging in flocks on their wintering grounds; the sound created by 20,000 of these swans is amazing. And they honk, they don't whistle even if they are commonly called whistling swans as well

Habitat:

Pocosin Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Story of my life, I always forget to video things! There aren't any reptiles out now, so I'm stuck with birds :) No lifers for the year yet, but have seen two birds I've only seen once before so that has been cool!

Hey Ashley, you get to see so many cool reptiles! It was awesome to see them flying in to settle on the lake for the night. The park ranger estimated the number and there were more flocks in the surrounding area! The sound was amazing and we were so mesmerized that none of us thought to video them to capture the sound.

So I hate you a little bit...I've never seen even one swan, and you're seeing thousands. Not fair :) Beautiful sunset photos though!
