Leopard slug

Limax maximus

Description:

One of the largest slugs from the family Limacidae, when fully grown can be up to 20 cm long. The specimen here was less than 10 cm long, about 7 cm in this retracted position. White-greyish with black dots and spots, and two thicker black line running from the base of inner shell up to the tip of the tail. Very sticky slime...

Habitat:

Found in deciduous forest of Rhône natural reserve - there is plenty of water there (river Rhône and four small lakes). Loves shady and dump places, so this specimen was found under the bark of the bench (bench being simply a log cut in two length-wise, and the bark underside of the bench, rotting).
