bottlebrush sawfly - female

Pterygophorus cinctus

Description:

A black robust wasp ( 20-22mm) with three orange bands around the abdomen and orange markings on dorsal and lateral sides of the thorax. Wings were translucent and dark. Antennae had white base.

Habitat:

back garden - on a lemon plant.

Notes:

This sawfly appeared to be searching for something on the lemon leaves - perhaps collecting some water off the leaves??. But she did not stay long. Male of this species are smaller.
