Eastern Chipmunk

Tamias striatus

Description:

Cute, little critter with reddish-brown fur on its upper body and five dark brown stripes, which contrasted with light brown stripes along its back, ending in a dark tail. It had lighter fur on the lower part of its body, and a tawny stripe that ran from its whiskers to below its ears with lighter stripes over and under its eyes.

Habitat:

Spotted under a tree root in a deciduous forest. There were tons of them running around and watching me!

Notes:

The common name "chipmunk" comes from an Ottawa word, "ajidamoonh", which means "one who descends trees headlong".
