Acacia Gall Rust Fungus

Uromycladium tepperianum

Description:

Acacia Gall Rust Fungus (Uromycladium tepperianum) is a rust fungus that infects over 100 species of Acacia and related genera including Paraserianthes in Australia, south-east Asia, the south Pacific and New Zealand. It has been introduced to South Africa as a biological control on the invasive Australian shrub Acacia saligna. This spotting shows a large gall that has infested a very young acacia plant. The leaves growing from the plant where the gall had taken hold were badly deformed. A nearby acacia which had the same infestation was dead. Whether or not the infestation caused its demise is unknown.

Habitat:

Found at a rural property. The area surrounded by dry native woodlands. A variety of wattle (acacia) species are in abundance.

Notes:

Another species worth considering is Uromycladium implexae, also a species of rust fungus connected to acacias.
