Indian black turtle

Melanochelys trijuga

Description:

Also called Indian pond terrapin, it came visiting my yard one night during heavy rains last week. Almost 40cms long this is the biggest specimen I have ever seen. Placed on near threatened status by IUCN. The hard shell is dark brown in color with reddish patches. A distinct tail could be seen while walking.

Habitat:

Spotted in my yard at night. Possibly came up from the nearby swamp in search of a place to lay eggs.
