Black Horse Fly

Tabanus atratus

Habitat:

A wide range of habitats; generally near water.

Notes:

While walking on the Long Pine Key Nature Trail, this female Black Horse Fly buzzed me a couple of time as it flew in circles around my head then landed on a near by shrub. I'm glad it did not want to bite me as their bite is painful. It is a large fly about an 1 inch or 25 mm. You can see the large mouth parts in pics 2 and 3. In pic 1 you can see the eyes don't meet in the middle of the head making this a female.
