Rose-breasted Grosbeak

Pheucticus ludovicianus

Description:

Rare and uncommon to California, but every year they still come. In very small numbers and scattered across the state. Near this location 2 males and 1 female have been spotted recently. The 3rd photo was taken with the female on the nest. They alternate taking turns and whenever the male or the female arrives you can hear a sweet little song.

Habitat:

This was in riparian habitat.

Thanks. Some birders were upset because some were using callbacks which is illegal. As I mentioned, rare to the area but some do show up every year. But this maybe the first successful breeding between the male and female Rose-breasted. Previous breedings were with Black-headed. Last report is 3 fledglings.
