Leaf Beetle

Diabrotica barberi

Description:

This beautiful little Leaf Beetle looks most like one of the variations of the notorious Northern Corn Rootworm (even though it was photographed in the very south of Mexico). This area is devoted almost entirely to corn, so actually it is surprising that only 1 beetle came into the light. These are diabolical crop pests as the generic name suggests.

Habitat:

Came to an ultraviolet light set up along the highway on a cliff between San Cristobal and Tuxtla Gutierrez, km 18.5, 1164 meters.
