Double-barred Finch

Taeniopygia bichenovii

Description:

Adults grow to 11cm; white underparts, black tail, buff grey back with wing feathers marked in white & black, black edged face mask with pale blue tinted face and blue-grey beak. Call is series of soft mew-like sounds and sharper chit sounds. Feeds on seeds and likes to be near water, usually seen in flocks, but often only pairs are sighted now in areas where once they were abundant, mainly due to habitat changes and feral/domestic animal predation.

Habitat:

Bushland, usually close to water sources, eastern Australia from south to north and across northern regions into Western Australia.

Thankyou for adding this to spotting of the day! They're lovely little birds.
Unfortunately the increase in feral and domestic cats is seeing their numbers drop dramatically.
