Buteo lagopus
This medium sized hawk was sitting on a fence post alongside a dirt road near Ignacio, CO.
Beautiful capture...of a Roughie!! Rough-Legged Hawks are wintering birds here in Colorado (I'm in the Denver area). They migrate down from their summering/breeding grounds up in the tundra/taiga of northern Canada and Alaska. They are feathered down to their toes...unlike the Red-Tailed Hawk that has bare legs about half the way up from the feet. Great spotting!!
